The begining

Advisory Board of Arogya Sandhan and experts in the field of hospital project had been invited for a discussion on setting up and viability of a Child Hospital on 16.02.03 at IMA office, Jadavpur. After a prolonged deliberation they recommended that the proposed Child hospital, functionally, is not a viable proposition. Instead, Arogya Sandhan should go in for a CHILD & MOTHER CARE HOSPITAL. Accordingly Arogya Sandhan requested Dr.Satadal Saha, MS., FRCS, Managing Director of West Bank Hospital, Howrah, to prepare a project report.

Basic Principles

All members have decided to follow the following basic principles in running the proposed hospital :

o Charges for the services will be very nominal as it will be on-cost-basis

o 30% of the services will be reserved for the people below poverty line at free of cost

o Members will render voluntary social service.

o No prevalent unethical medical and non-medical practices in the parlance of healthcare    will be followed/encouraged.

o Humanity, Charity, Services and Transparency will be appropriately blended and strictly    followed at every step of a activity.

Dr.Satadal Saha and his team, who are expert & experienced in this field, have been kind enough to offer an honorary service in preparing the Project Report.

Features of the Project

o 100-bed CHILD & MOTHER CARE HOSPITAL

o 70 % services will be reserved for Children

o 30% Services will be reserved for Mothers and others

o Total cost of the project is 5.5 crores

o To be executed in 3 Phases

Need

In India 80% of the population can hardly afford the bare minimum healthcare facility because

o Of ever increasing cost of medical treatment.

o Governmental arrangement falls far short of the need

37% of the Indian population i.e.,40 crores people are living below the poverty line

o All most all people in this category are in the vicious cycle of Malnutrition

o Major sufferers are mothers and their female child as they are neglected in every    sphere of their life in the society.

o Most of them are born with curable disease, live with the same and die due to it.

No low-cost hospital is available in the southeastern fringe of the Kolkata City.

This project will offer medical treatment to the Lower Middle Class and People Below Poverty Line

STRENGTH of this project(As envisaged by Dr.Satadal Saha and his team)

o New Concept

o The charges will be lower than corporate hospitals, attracting patients

o Accessible location, well connected by public conveyance

o For a particular socio-economic class, this will be the only available centre

o Members' vision is in perfect harmony with the concept of service and institution - two    most important ingredients for any successful healthcare model today

o As Return on Equity is not desired in this project, the internal generation of funds will    meet the needs for expansion to a larger extent than any other private hospitals.
