Our proposed area is situated in South 24 Parganas and South Kolkata, West Bengal. Mainly the slums are beside the Rail way track from Jadavpore station to Garia / Baghajatin station like Taltala Colony, Hossainpore, Jadavpur Kamarpara Rail colony etc, South 24 parganas, West Bengal. The gateway root is Sealdah rail station to South 24 parganas different stations. East side of the area passes through eastern bypass towards canning and west side the Kolkata busy bus root. Main accessible root is train service and bus root. These areas link through Ballygange junction station. The people are living beside the rail way track with high risk and unhealthy conditions. Maximum dwellers have come from rural village of south 24 parganas district. Some of them are migrant population. As their priorities for livings (first five requirements) are food, shelter, cloths, health and education respectively therefore they are least interested about the health awareness. Until and unless they become seriously ill, not taking care for themselves.
Maximum huts are made by plastic sheets, tiles, bamboo and other raw materials. Most of huts are measure 7’’ X 8’’ sq. ft. areas and living 5 family members in congested situation. There are no proper sanitation and normally they using rail way track for latrine and urinal. Drinking water is not available in the areas; it is collected from KMC water supply taps from nearer point.
Socio economical condition of the people is very poor. Maximum male family members are daily labours, rickshaw Poolers and scrape pickers. Female members are working as maid servant in kolkata city, called ‘Babu Bari’. Some children are involved for helping hand job at different shops and few of the youth going with his father for helper job. Adolescent girls are going with her mother for helping work. Few adolescent girls having unsafe mobilization in different risk porn areas and some are going main city as call girls.
Knowledge of health issues is extremely poor. 15 % people are aware about the national health programme i.e. RNTCP/ DOTS, NLEP and RCH etc. 40% mother heard about polio programme (They called it ‘Janmo Tika Card’), 10% children completed full immunization but immunization card is not available (Verbally informed) . Some of the mother can’t remember whether immunization is completed or not for their child. 5% people have heard / knowledge regarding STI / HIV / AIDS and family planning issues of the population. They are hard the name of ‘BULA DI’ in radio publication. Most of them are not properly aware about STD / HIV AIDS disease. 7 % of eligible couples are using the modern family planning method. 75% girls are marrying below 18 years.
